Joan was born in Manhattan, Kansas to Carl and Pauline (Hoerman) Berggren. Her family moved to Vallejo, California in 1945 where her father served in the U.S. Navy at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. Joan attended junior high and high school in Oakland, California and graduated from Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California. Joan married Henry Noland in 1954 while he was serving in the U.S. Navy and stationed at Hunters Point in San Francisco. They were soon sent to San Diego where Henry finished out his military service.

The couple returned to Redwood City after military service ended and started a family. They moved to Fremont in 1961 where they purchased a home. While raising their three children, Joan volunteered in the neighborhood elementary school helping teachers and playing the guitar and singing songs with the children. She graduated in 1976 from Ohlone College with an Associate in Arts degree. She became a licensed realtor soon after and worked as a realtor for over 20 years until her retirement.

Joan was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Fremont since the 1960’s where she actively served in various capacities over the years including church secretary, council member, and worship team guitarist.

Joan was someone who will long be remembered for her genuine interest in others, encouraging kindness, and hospitality. She was one to ask about the details of your life and remember them. Her steady positive presence will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her son Dennis Noland and daughter Kate Werner. She is preceded in death by her husband Henry and son Daniel Noland. Joan is also survived by loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
