Miriam Simbula 3/20/41 – 2/27/16 Resident of Fremont, CA

Survivors: Caio Simbula, Sr., Husband Caio Simbula, Jr., Son (Josefine Simbula, daughter in law) Katherine Reese, Daughter (Todd Reese, Son in law) James Umbarger, Grandson Joshua Umbarger, Grandson Lucia Simbula, Granddaughter

Loving, loyal and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Miriam was born in Esquipulas, Guatemala to Adrian and Alicia Fernandez on March 20, 1941. She enjoyed learning and was a stellar student throughout her entire education. She was a beauty queen from age 16 – 18 years old who competed locally and was invited to run as Miss Guatemala. She respectfully declined on behalf of her mother who did not approve as she wanted Miriam to further her education. After graduating high school she continued her education in college with a focus on child development. She then became a teacher of a mixed class that consisted of children in preschool to 4th grade. The children loved her so much that they would stay after school to assist her with cleaning the chalk boards and closing up.

Miriam came to the United States as a student at Loyola Marymount University in Chicago in 1964. She decided to leave Chicago due to the unbearable weather and went to visit her relatives in San Francisco in 1965. She was preparing to go back to Guatemala to teach English when one night she met her husband Caio through mutual friends. It was love at first sight. They wed in 1967 and were never apart since the day they met. Their first child, their son Caio, Jr. was born in 1968; and their daughter Katherine Alicia Simbula 1972.

As hobbies she enjoyed cross-stitch, crochet, sewing, gardening and cooking. Ever adventurous, she enjoyed traveling domestically and internationally; and her weekly day trips with her husband. She loved dancing, art and classic movies.

Being with her family is what she enjoyed the most with her husband, children and grandchildren and cooking meals, laughing over dinner, and telling stories about when she was a young girl in Guatemala and her experiences here in the states.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the Fremont Kaiser Permanente Main Hospital for their support in her final days.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 7th, from 11am-12:30pm at Fremont Chapel of the Roses, 1940 Peralta Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday at 1pm at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 37588 Fremont Blvd., Fremont, CA 94536. Burial will follow at Chapel of the Chimes Memorial Park in Hayward, CA.

A note for Kiko & Family: I know there are so many close family and friends that wish so badly they could be with you all, including myself. And so, on behalf of them and especially myself, I would like to extend my deepest sympathy to Kiko and Kathy and Larry and their families for the boundless loss they must endure. Miriam and my mom were cousins. They were very fond of each other and although they lived far from one another, their hearts were always very close. When they visited each other, it was as if they were the same two young girls they had been so long ago, full of life, love and hope for their dear loved ones….eating ice cream, Ghirardelli chocolates and laughing about the good old days. Miriam showed me that a heart like hers, so strong and full of love, can always be so very close to the hearts that love her so much, no matter how far the distance. Even if she is farther from us than she has ever been, the memory of her warmth, her heart and her love seems that much closer and persistent. A beautiful woman like Miriam with such a dedicated love for her husband and family will always keep her heart open to us and her love will keep us close to her spirit and to each other, no matter how far apart we are. God bless you dear Miriam and look over us. Keep us in your prayers and know that we will keep you in ours, forever to hold your heart dearly close. May you enjoy the soothing comforts of heaven with your loved ones who have passed and we look forward to being in your shining presence when it is time for us to be together again and echo the heavens with our laughter. In God's name, rest in peace. Carolyn Quintero-Perry & Family San Diego, CA
