Obituary For Caridad "Carrie" Manalang Pangilinan

Caridad “Carrie” Manalang Pangilinan, a true example of faith and devotion in Newark, California, passed away while sleeping at her home on April 5, 2024, in the company and care of loved ones — family and pets alike. Born on September 30, 1930 in Manila, Philippines, Carrie was born the third of seven children. She has joined husband Santiago and siblings Lourdes (Paul), Esperanza (Mauricio), Emanuel and Priscilla in the departed, and is survived by Mercedes, Ofelia, and sister-in-law, Eleanora.

She initially studied to be a teacher and graduated cum laude. Her specialty was in the English language, which she taught in the classroom and to her children at home before immigrating to the United States in 1969. First settling in St. Louis, MO, she would later move to Vallejo, CA in 1979 and then ultimately to Newark, CA in 1992 where she would remain and call home until her timely passing.

Carrie was the pinnacle of perseverance. Upon moving to US, she adapted and changed professions to become a phlebotomist; a profession which she held for 26 years, while also at times maintaining other secondary jobs as well. In her spare time, she focused on her calling as a devout Catholic. She organized prayer groups and rosary making for the less fortunate. Though her life did not solely revolve around her occupation or religion, but rather, her family. Balancing discipline and tenderness, she raised and is survived by her five children: Clair (Karen), Carmelo, Christian, Chrysalie (Timothy), and Charisma.

As the years progressed, so did her role. Her children soon had families of their own. As a Grandmother, her sweetness and kindness were unparalleled. She welcomed her grandchildren with widespread loving arms and always invited — and at times, playfully guilted — them to come visit as often as possible. Blessed in her health and longevity, her matriarchal title changed once more to Great-Grandmother. In total, Carrie witnessed her family grow with and is survived by six grandchildren: Alexander, Nicholas (Courtney), Anthony (Deanne), Justin (Jessica), Brandon, and Carissa, and seven great-grandchildren, Rose, Cora, Riley, Ruby, Jude, Louie, and Charlie.

Carrie was the personification of her name’s definition. Her every action showed how someone can and should be charitable of not only their time and energy, but also of their joy. And the place she found joy most of all was inside the people around her. From watching baseball games to going to Red Robin for the millionth time, it was always a special moment as long as her loved ones were near. Her infectious chuckle and natural silliness is already missed, but cannot be forgotten.

Funeral services are being handled by Fremont Chapel of the Roses. All are welcome to pay their respects.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Catholic Charities.
